The European Rapid Alert System (RASSF) issued two urgent bulletins on 22 July and 2 August with warnings on chloramphenicol contamination in (xylanase) enzyme preparations from Belgium which were being used in feed additives.
The raw materials were found to contain up to 672 µg/kg of the banned antibiotic, for which there is zero tolerance in the EU. Levels of 9.7 and 14.9 mg/kg were measured in the additives. The source of contamination was given as enzyme preparations manufactured in Japan, but it has not yet been fully clarified how the contamination happened.

In relation to this incident, the European Commission issued a recommendation on 31 July 2013 (RASFF 2013/1017-add08) to block all affected enzyme mixes from further processing in feed additives. Feed produced prior to 19-22 July that included the potentially contamined enzyme preparations can, in the opinion of the Commission, continue to be marketed and used for feeding purposes without restriction.

In the meantime, the listing of the rapid alert system is growing almost daily. In addition to reports of chloramphenicol in xylanase preparations, the listings of the EU rapid alert system now also include notifications concerning cellulase, amylase and pectinase products, which are also used in food production. Chloramphenicol is a drug that has long been banned in the manufacture of animal products. Hence it is all the more astonishing that this antibiotic is now appearing in non-animal products and additives, respectively. One reason could be the use of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and fungi in the manufacture of technical enzyme preparations. The exact route of entry has not been identified.

AGROLAB detects residues in feed

We use HPLC-MS/MS to rapidly and reliably detect traces of the compound in raw materials, premixes, finished feeds, enzyme preparations and additives, and recommend performing such analysis if you are in any doubt. You will then have the necessary certificate to show your buyers.
