...which can be seen from the fact that the Nutri-Score Steering Committee has adopted an update of the calculation basis for beverages, which will apply from 1.1.2024.
For beverages with low sugar content, sweetened milk drinks as well as beverages with sweeteners, the committee considers an adjustment of the algorithm necessary.
- Milk, milk-based drinks and plant-based drinks were previously classified as "food" and will be assigned to "beverages" in the future.
- Beverages with a low sugar content will be rated more favourably via the new algorithm compared to those with a higher sugar content, which will make differentiation easier
- Water will remain the only beverage to carry an "A" rating.
- For fruit juices and nectars as well as "smoothies", the algorithm does not change the previous classification. They will continue to be rated "C"-"E" depending on their composition.
- Sweeteners as a substitute for sugar are not to be rewarded, now that the use of sugar substitutes has also been critically assessed. The addition of sweeteners is assessed with negative points and leads to a downgrade in the Nutri-Score.
