As of August 8, 2022, foods containing titanium dioxide (E 171) may no longer be marketed.
In the most recent risk assessment of the white colour pigment, which was used in confectionery, sugar-coated tablets and as a carrier, a mutagenic effect could not be ruled out. Therefore, the European Commission withdrew the approval as a food additive with Regulation (EU) 2022/63 on Feb. 7, 2022. The transition period for already manufactured goods expired on Aug. 7th.
YOUR PLUS: AGROLAB Iberica (Tarragona) has developed a rapid and highly sensitive method for the determination of titanium dioxide in food. The method is independent of particle size and uses sensitive ICP-MS (ion-coupled plasma mass spectroscopy).
