The Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed Section Novel Food and Toxicological Safety of the Food Chain (ScoPAFF) Section Novel Food and Toxicological Safety of the Food Chain has changed its recommendation with respect to the presence of Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH) in food, including food for infants and young children.
The statement by April 21st, 2022 1) will replace the former statement of the committee from June 2020 in the same matter. Main issue of the new draft is the expansion of the recommendation for the evaluation of MOAH residues from baby food to all kind of food. Analysis and sampling should be done according to the provisions of Regulation (EC)
No 333/2007 and in line with the guidance document by the JRC.
It is mentioned that products shall be withdrawn or recalled from the market if necessary by all member states in an uniform enforcement approach, when the sum of the concentrations of MOAH in food are above the following maximum LOQs :
- 0,5 mg/kg for dry foods with a low fat/oil content (≤ 4% fat/oil)
- 1 mg/kg for foods with a higher fat/oil content (> 4% fat/oil)
- 2 mg/kg for fats/ oils
