The use of antibiotics in livestock farming is controversial. In particular, the prophylactic treatment of entire herds in the event of a bacterial infection of individual animals, is seen as a cause of the increasing formation of resistant germs, which can no longer be treated with current antibiotic agents.
To ensure that bacterial infections can still be successfully combated in the future, the administration of these drugs must be restrictive and strictly controlled, especially since hardly any new antibiotics are being developed worldwide.
Veterinary drugs or resistant microorganisms enter the human food chain via food of animal origin but also via plant food. The reliable and sensitive analytical detection of these active substances is an essential prerequisite for the success of preventive measures taken to minimize their entry into the food chain.
