Genetically modified organism (GMO) means an organism, in which the natural genetic code has been manipulated in order to achieve novel desirable properties e.g. herbicide resistance in certain crops.
The use of GMO derived materials in feed and food need special approval. The legal concept is defined in Article 2 of Regulation 1829/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council on genetically modified food and feed.
European regulation makes it mandatory at all stages of the production and marketing of a foodstuff to be able to tell if it contains any GMO derived ingredient. It is crucial to ensure full traceability for each compound and provide correct labelling of all GMO through the complete production chain. But also any potential risk for a cross-contamination of GMO-free declared material by any GMO needs to be analytically approved by regular random testing.
