The general labelling obligation for surface treatment agents for fruit and vegetables in Germany was published without taking into account objections from the trade associations.
The main issue is the indication "waxed" on fruit and vegetables. Until now, this information was only required in Germany for fresh citrus fruits, melons, apples and pears if one of the following additives was used: E 901 to E 904, E 912 and E914.
From now on, the labelling obligation applies to all fresh fruit and vegetables and also to so-called coating agents with the additive codes E 445, E 471, E 473, E 474. The labelling must be indicated visibly for consumers on loose goods as well as on pre-packaged products. The EU is now under pressure to adopt a uniform European labelling regulation as soon as possible.
