The British authorities have already published which labelling requirements will apply to food products that are sold in the UK by EU-based manufacturers after 31.12.2020.
On the part of the United Kingdom, a transitional period until 22.9.2022 is planned. Until then, the relevant labelling requirements for food and food supplements produced in the EU and intended for sale in the British Isles must be met. 21 months is certainly not too short a period given the abundance of necessary adjustments.
In the case of trade in the opposite direction, i.e. products produced in the UK and intended for sale in EU member states, nothing will change with regard to food labelling. Food and feed products that are to be marketed in the EU from the United Kingdom must continue to comply with current EU regulations and standards. For this reason, the EU did not plan to extend the transitional period beyond 31.12.2020.
Great Britain becomes a third country - regulations for non-EU states come into force
However, the import rules for food of animal origin from non-EU countries will also apply to products from the UK from 1.1.2021 onwards, according to which the import is not permitted without explicit approval.
Each third country and also each manufacturing plant must have been included in a list of the Commission before. The food must also demonstrably meet the EU hygiene requirements. Compliance with the requirements is checked at the EU external border by prior notification and at a charge.
Products of non-animal origin are also checked, but according to the official sampling plans.
In addition to health certificates and phytosanitary certificates, EU law requires certificates (on marketing standards) for certain basic agricultural products imported into the EU. However, the exit treaty provides that goods of non-animal origin will be exempted from the new import conditions if they are still offered on the EU and UK markets before 31.12.2020, i.e. the end of the transitional period in the EU or in the United Kingdom legally placed on the market, and remain in free circulation on both markets.
