tomato

After decrees with respect to durum wheat, milk and rice a further decree on mandatory origin labelling for tomatoes in tomato products has also been adopted now and Italy may not comply with the EU procedures also in this case as FoodDrinkEurope the European food industry platform recently claimed.

The decree requires the indication of the (1) country of growing and (2) country of transformation of tomatoes used in tomatoes derivatives. Some flexibility is allowed in certain cases. The decree was set in force by Oct 22nd. The experiment shall run for 2 years and will be automatically withdrawn as soon as the Commission Implementing Regulation on Article 26(3) of Regulation 1169/2011shall have been adopted.

From the perspective of an analytical lab, we like to mention, that AGROLABGROUP can analytically track back a geographical region or even the field where a tomato has been grown by comparison of the so called “stable isotopes fingerprint” with a certified reference sample. However, as soon as a tomato has been processed or was mixed with tomatoes from different geographical origins, no analytical discrimination will be impossible.
