Lactitol is a disaccharide polyol derived from lactose, used as an artificial sweetener, with a sweetness profile similar to sugar.
Lactitol is used in the food industry as a sweetening agent. Its stability, solubility and low calories make it suitable for a variety of low-calorie, low-fat or sugar-free foods.
Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2017/450 authorizing the placing on the market of lactitol as a novel food ingredient has been published.
Because lactitol is authorized for some uses as a food additive, there was concern about the possibility of misleading the consumer and giving excessive intake of lactitol, so that, at the time of the evaluation, all these concerns have been taken into account.
The report has finally been in favour of the following conditions:
Lactitol may be marketed as a novel food ingredient only,
- in food supplements in the form of capsules or pills,
- for the adult population,
- with a maximum dose of 20 grams per day
The name to be indicated on the labelling of the foodstuffs containing it is "lactitol".
