Since 26.10.2020 the methods of analysis for the determination of constituents of animal origin within the framework of the official feed control have changed.

REGULATION (EU) No 51/2013 methods of analysis for the determination of constituents of animal origin for the official control of feed.

Current legislation prohibits the administration of animal proteins to ruminants for the prevention, control and eradication of some transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (BSE - commonly known as mad cow disease). The ban on feeding conspecifics to farmed animals also extends to fish and poultry.

In our laboratories the control of each type of feed is carried out through two different steps.

Highly specialized staff analyze the feed under the microscope, in parallel or alternatively, ruminant DNA can be detected in the sample as required by the regulations. The synergy of two different but complementary methods guarantees the safety of the result.

From October 2020, a new amendment Regulation EU 2020/1560 of 26/10/2020 amends Annex VI of Regulation EC 152/2009 laying down the methods of analysis for the determination of constituents of animal origin in the context of official feed control. The principles of the method do not change, but for the microscopy section, technicians must recognize milk globules and lactose crystals.
